Do I need a powerflush? 7 signs to look for
You probably need a powerflush if your radiators are cold at the bottom, the water is black or brown when you bleed them, the boiler is noisy or kettling, the house takes ages to warm up, or radiators need bleeding again and again. A new boiler going onto an older system is another good time. If your heating warms up quickly and every radiator is hot all over, you probably don’t need one.
The signs
- Radiators cold at the bottom but warm at the top.
- Black or brown water when you bleed a radiator.
- A noisy boiler: banging, gurgling or a kettle-like rumble (kettling).
- The house is slow to warm up, or some rooms never get warm.
- Radiators that need bleeding often.
- The boiler keeps breaking down or locking out, or an engineer has found sludge in it.
- A new boiler is going in on an older system.
When you probably don’t need one
If the system is fairly new and was cleaned when it was fitted, every radiator heats evenly, and the water runs clear when bled, there is no reason to flush it. We will tell you honestly if we don’t think you need one.
What a powerflush does
A machine pushes water and cleaning chemical through the whole system at high flow, flushing each radiator in turn until the water runs clear. Then the system is refilled with inhibitor to protect it. See how a powerflush works.

Questions people ask
How often do you need a powerflush?
Only when the signs appear, or when a new boiler or radiators go in. A system that is kept clean with inhibitor and an annual boiler service may never need another one.
Can a powerflush damage my heating?
On a very old or already weak system, a flush can reveal a leak that the sludge was hiding. We check the system first and talk you through any risk before starting.
Does a powerflush help a noisy boiler?
Often, yes. Kettling and banging are frequently caused by sludge or scale restricting the flow through the boiler.
