How often do you need a powerflush?
Only when it needs it: there is no fixed schedule. Flush when sludge shows up as cold radiators, black water or a noisy boiler, or before a new boiler goes in. With inhibitor and a magnetic filter kept up, a clean system stays clean far longer.
The short answer
There is no fixed schedule. A powerflush is needed when sludge has built up enough to cause problems, not every few years by default. A system that is protected after a flush, with inhibitor in the water and a magnetic filter that is cleaned, stays clean far longer.
When to powerflush
- When the signs appear: radiators cold at the bottom, black water from the bleed valve, slow heating, or a noisy boiler.
- Before a new boiler goes onto an existing system.
- After new radiators are added to old pipework.
- After major work that has stirred up the system, such as moving the boiler.
How to keep the system clean after a flush
- Inhibitor in the water. It slows the corrosion that makes sludge. Its level should be checked at the yearly boiler service.
- A magnetic filter on the return pipe catches loose sludge before it settles. It is cleaned out at the service. Is a magnetic filter worth it?
- Watch for air. If you have to bleed radiators often, air is getting in somewhere, and air speeds up corrosion. Get it checked.
- Keep the pressure steady. A system that keeps losing pressure is being topped up with fresh water, which brings in fresh oxygen and more corrosion.
How long does a powerflush last?
It depends on the system. The flush removes the sludge that is there on the day; how quickly new sludge forms depends on the age of the radiators, whether air or fresh water keeps getting in, and whether inhibitor and a filter are kept up. That is why we add inhibitor at the end of every flush.

Questions people ask
How often should a central heating system be powerflushed?
Only when it needs it. There is no set interval. Flush when the signs of sludge appear, or before a new boiler is fitted.
Does a new boiler need a powerflush every year?
No. A one-off clean when the boiler is fitted, then inhibitor and a filter checked at each yearly service, is the normal approach.
Can you powerflush too often?
There is no benefit in flushing a system that is already clean. If the water runs clear and every radiator heats evenly, it doesn't need doing.
How do I know if my system needs flushing again?
The same signs as before: cold patches at the bottom of radiators, dark water when you bleed them, and slow or noisy heating.
