The rule

Do I need a powerflush before a new boiler?

In most homes, yes. Here’s the rule, word for word:

The requirementApproved Document L, Volume 1 · para 8.8

“Before a new heating appliance is installed, all central heating and primary hot water circuits should be thoroughly cleaned and flushed out. A suitable chemical inhibitor should be added to the primary heating circuit to protect against scale and corrosion.

In hard water areas, suitable measures should be taken to treat the feed water to water heaters and the hot water circuit of combination boilers to reduce limescale accumulation. Domestic central heating systems should be prepared and commissioned to BS 7593.”

What boiler manufacturers say about a clean system

A new boiler has very narrow waterways, and sludge from the old system can block them within months. That’s why boiler makers write a clean system into their warranty terms. Here’s how each one puts it:

  • Worcester BoschHeat exchanger guarantee: the system “must be flushed and cleansed in accordance with BS7593”, with inhibitor added.Read their terms
  • Vaillant“The boiler must be flushed prior to first ignition.” Dirty system water “will make the guarantee void”.Read their terms
  • Intergas“The system must be flushed and cleansed in accordance with BS 7593:2019.”Read their terms
  • AlphaWarranty needs the system “appropriately flushed and cleaned during installation”, with inhibitor added.Read their terms
  • IdealBenchmark checklist must be completed, and damage from “sludge resulting from corrosion” is excluded.Read their terms
  • BaxiFull warranty needs the Benchmark checklist completed and a yearly service, where the engineer “should check that the water in your heating system is clean”.Read their terms
  • Glow-wormBenchmark logbook must be completed at installation. Faults from sludge or dirty water are chargeable.Read their terms
  • ViessmannWarranty valid only with the Benchmark sheet completed. Faults from “sludge, blockages, scale or poor water quality” are excluded.Read their terms
  • NavienRecommends the system is “flushed thoroughly before installation”. Failures from sludge may not be covered.Read their terms

Checked against each manufacturer’s published warranty terms, October 2026. Terms change and vary by model, so always check the terms for your own boiler. The Benchmark checklist your installer completes asks whether the system was “flushed, cleaned and a suitable inhibitor applied … in accordance with BS7593”, and which cleaner and inhibitor were used.

Your paperwork

A written record of your system clean, as a certificate

After every flush we test the water and give you a written Powerflush Certificate: what was done, which cleaner and inhibitor were used, and how the water tested afterwards.

The certificate supports your new boiler installation and its warranty paperwork. Your installer uses it for the water quality section of the Benchmark checklist, and you keep it with your boiler papers.

  • Fully qualified in plumbing
  • Qualified heating engineer
  • Water tested after every flush

The certificate comes from us. It isn’t issued by the government or by the boiler manufacturer.

System flush before boiler installation: how it works

  1. Tell us when your boiler is going in

We plan the flush around your installer, just before the old boiler comes out or once the new one is fitted.

  2. We powerflush the whole system

Every radiator is flushed in turn until the water runs clear, then the system is protected with inhibitor.

  3. We test the water

We check the system water after the flush, so you have proof it’s clean.

  4. You get your certificate

Your written certificate gives your installer the details for the Benchmark checklist, and you keep it with your warranty papers.

Worth it

Why a clean system saves you money

Clean system works better→uses less energy→lower heating bills→longer boiler life

Sludge makes the boiler work harder to heat your home. Clean water lets the heat reach every radiator, so the boiler runs less and lasts longer. Starting a new boiler on a clean system protects what you’ve just paid for.

Do I need a flush at every boiler service?

No. A boiler service should include a check of the inhibitor in your system water. If that check, or the signs (cold spots, black water, a noisy boiler), shows sludge, a flush is the fix. See signs you need a powerflush.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do I need a powerflush before a new boiler?

In most homes, yes, the system needs a thorough clean first. Building Regulations guidance (Approved Document L, para 8.8) says all central heating circuits should be thoroughly cleaned and flushed before a new boiler is installed, with inhibitor added, to BS 7593. A powerflush is the most thorough of the recognised ways to do it.

Does it have to be a powerflush?

The rules say “cleaned and flushed” to BS 7593. They don’t name one method. A powerflush is one of the recognised ways to clean a system, and it’s the most thorough: clean water and cleaning chemical are pushed through every radiator, one at a time, until the water runs clear.

For an older system, or one with radiators cold at the bottom, black water when bled or a noisy boiler, a powerflush is the right choice. For a newer, clean system, less may do, and we’ll tell you honestly which yours needs.

Is a powerflush a legal requirement for a new boiler?

Not by name. The guidance says the system should be cleaned and flushed to the British Standard BS 7593, and a powerflush is one of the recognised methods. Your installer follows it to show the installation complies, and boiler warranties depend on it.

Is this a new law?

No. It has been in the Approved Document since June 2022, and the cleaning advice was in Building Regulations guidance before that. The new 2026 edition, which takes effect on 24 March 2027, keeps the same wording.

Who has to make sure it is done?

The engineer who fits and commissions your new boiler. They record on the Benchmark commissioning checklist that the system was flushed, cleaned and inhibited to BS 7593, and which products were used. We do the flush and give you and your installer the written details.

Does Worcester Bosch require a powerflush for the warranty?

Worcester Bosch’s heat exchanger guarantee says the system must be flushed and cleansed in accordance with BS 7593, with a corrosion inhibitor added. A powerflush is one way to meet that. Its main guarantee also excludes damage from sludge and blockages.

Does Vaillant require a powerflush for the warranty?

Vaillant’s guarantee terms say the boiler must be flushed before first ignition and the water kept clean, logged in the Benchmark logbook. Failing to keep the water clean will make the guarantee void. Its 10-year extended guarantee asks for the system to be flushed, cleansed and inhibited to BS 7593.

What about Ideal, Baxi and other makes?

Ideal, Baxi, Glow-worm and Viessmann all need the Benchmark checklist completed for the full warranty, and their terms exclude or charge for faults caused by sludge or dirty water. Intergas asks for a flush to BS 7593:2019 by name. Always check the terms for your own boiler.

Will my boiler warranty be void if the system is not cleaned?

It can be. Every maker we checked ties the full warranty to the Benchmark checklist, which asks whether the system was cleaned to BS 7593, and most exclude or charge for faults caused by sludge or dirty water.

What is a BS 7593 powerflush certificate?

It is our written record of the clean: your address and the date, the method, the cleaner and inhibitor used, the water test results and the engineer’s details. It supports your new boiler installation: your installer uses it for the water quality section of the Benchmark checklist, and you keep it with your warranty papers. BS 7593 is a code of practice, so there is no government-issued certificate; this is the paperwork that shows the clean was done.

Do I need a powerflush when my boiler is serviced?

Not usually. The annual service should include a check of the inhibitor in your system water. If that check, or the signs (cold spots, black water, a noisy boiler), shows sludge, a clean is the fix.

Can you flush the system on the day the new boiler goes in?

Yes. We can plan it around your installer, either just before the old boiler comes out or once the new one is fitted.

Which boiler brands do you work with?

We powerflush systems with all the common makes, including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi, Viessmann, Glow-worm, Potterton, Alpha, Intergas, Navien, Main, Ariston and Remeha. The flush cleans the whole system, so it suits any make of boiler.

Does every system need a full powerflush?

Not always. BS 7593 lets the installer choose the right method for the system. A newer, clean system may need less. An older system, or one with cold spots or black water, is where a powerflush earns its keep. We’ll tell you honestly which yours needs.

Do you cover my town?

We cover East Kent, including Sandwich, Deal, Dover, Canterbury, Ramsgate, Margate, Broadstairs, Herne Bay, Whitstable, Folkestone, Faversham and Ashford.
