Do I need a powerflush before a new boiler?
If your heating system is older, or shows signs of sludge, yes: it should be cleaned before or when a new boiler is fitted. Otherwise the old sludge flows straight into the new boiler and can block it. Boiler manufacturers expect the system to be cleaned to the British Standard, and some warranties depend on it. A powerflush is the most thorough way to do it.
Why it matters
A new boiler has narrow waterways in its heat exchanger. Sludge from an old system can settle there within months, making the boiler noisy, less efficient and more likely to break down. Cleaning first means the new boiler starts on clean water.
What the manufacturers and the rules say
The British Standard for installing heating systems (BS 7593) says a system should be cleaned and treated when a new boiler is fitted. Boiler makers ask for this in their installation instructions, and some warranties can be refused if the system was not cleaned. Check your boiler’s warranty terms.
Powerflush or chemical clean?
For a fairly clean system, a chemical clean and flush may be enough. For an older system, radiators cold at the bottom, or black water when bled, a powerflush is the better choice because it flushes every radiator until the water runs clear.

Questions people ask
Can the powerflush be done on the same day as the boiler?
It is usually done just before the new boiler goes in, often as part of the same job. We can plan it around your boiler installer.
Does every new boiler need a powerflush?
Not always. A newer, clean system may only need a chemical clean. An older or sludgy system should be powerflushed.
Will a dirty system void my boiler warranty?
It can. Many manufacturers require the system to be cleaned and protected with inhibitor. Check your warranty terms.
