Heating guide

How long does a powerflush take?

Most powerflushes are finished in one day. Bigger homes with more radiators, or systems with a lot of sludge, can take longer. You can stay at home while it is done; the heating and hot water are off for most of the day.

What affects how long it takes

  • How many radiators there are. Each one is flushed in turn.
  • How much sludge is in the system. A badly blocked system takes longer to run clear.
  • The type of system. Combi, system and older open-vent systems are each connected a little differently.

What happens on the day

  1. We check the system and the boiler and protect your floors.
  2. The powerflush machine is connected, usually at the pump or a radiator.
  3. Cleaning chemical is added and circulated through the whole system.
  4. Each radiator is flushed in turn, reversing the flow, until the water runs clear.
  5. The system is refilled with clean water and inhibitor, and every radiator is checked for heat.

Do I need to be in?

Someone needs to be there to let us in and at the end, so we can show you the radiators heating up. You can carry on at home during the day.

Questions people ask

Is a powerflush messy?

No. It is a sealed process: the dirty water goes into the machine’s tank, and floors are protected around the radiators.

Will I have heating and hot water during the flush?

Not for most of the day. It is all back on, and the radiators are tested, before we leave.

Can you powerflush in one day in a large house?

Most homes, yes. For very large systems or heavy sludge we will tell you beforehand if it might run longer.
