Black water when you bleed a radiator: what it means

Black water from a radiator means sludge. It is magnetite, a fine black iron oxide made as the steel inside your radiators and pipes slowly corrodes. A little discolouration is common in older systems, but properly black water means there is enough sludge to block radiators and strain the boiler. A powerflush removes it and inhibitor is added to slow it coming back.

Where the black sludge comes from

Your heating water sits in steel radiators and passes through copper and other metals. Over time, oxygen and the mix of metals cause corrosion, and the result is magnetite: black, heavy and magnetic. It settles where the water moves slowly, mostly along the bottom of radiators.

Brown or orange water?

Rusty brown or orange water usually means active rusting, often because air is getting into the system. It is worth having looked at, as it can point to a problem that keeps adding air and corrosion.

Why it matters

  • Radiators go cold at the bottom as sludge builds up.
  • The boiler works harder and can become noisy or lock out.
  • Sludge can block the boiler’s heat exchanger and the pump, which are expensive to replace.

How to clear it

Bleeding releases air, not sludge. If the water is black, the sludge needs flushing out of the whole system. A powerflush does that in one visit, then the system is refilled with inhibitor to protect it. Other signs you need a powerflush.

Questions people ask

Is black radiator water dangerous?

It isn’t dangerous to you, but it is a sign of sludge that can damage the boiler and pump over time.

Should radiator water be clear?

Water from a clean, well-protected system is usually clear or only slightly discoloured. Properly black water means sludge.

Will bleeding get rid of black water?

No. Bleeding only releases air. The sludge stays in the system until it is flushed out.
