Is a powerflush worth it?
Yes, when sludge is the cause of the problem: radiators cold at the bottom, black water when you bleed them, or a noisy boiler. It is also worth doing before a new boiler. If the system is already clean, or the fault is a valve, air or the boiler itself, a powerflush won’t fix it.
The short answer
A powerflush is worth it when sludge is the cause of your heating problem. The clearest signs are radiators that are warm at the top but cold at the bottom, black water when you bleed a radiator, and a boiler that bangs or kettles. It is also worth it before a new boiler goes onto an old system. It is not worth it if your system is already clean or the fault is somewhere else.
Checklist: a powerflush is likely to help if…
- Radiators are cold at the bottom and warm at the top.
- Water from the bleed valve comes out black or dark brown.
- Some rooms take much longer to warm up than others.
- You have to bleed radiators often.
- The boiler is noisy: banging, gurgling or kettling.
- A new boiler is going onto an older system.
- New radiators have been fitted onto old pipework.
If you can tick two or more, sludge is a likely cause and a powerflush is usually the right fix. See the 7 signs in more detail.
When a powerflush is NOT the answer
- Radiator cold at the top, warm at the bottom. That is usually trapped air, not sludge. Bleeding the radiator normally sorts it. Why a radiator is cold at the top.
- One radiator cold, the rest fine. It may be a stuck valve or a balancing problem rather than the whole system.
- No heat anywhere. Check the boiler is on and has pressure. A breakdown needs a heating engineer, not a flush.
- A new system that is already clean. If the water runs clear and every radiator heats evenly, there is nothing to flush out.

What you get from a powerflush
- Sludge, rust and debris washed out of the boiler, pipes and every radiator.
- Heat back across the whole radiator, not just the top.
- Less strain on the boiler and pump, because water can move freely again.
- Inhibitor added at the end to slow new sludge forming.
- A clean system ready for a new boiler, which most boiler makers expect before they honour their warranty. Powerflush for a new boiler.

Questions people ask
Is a powerflush worth it on an old system?
Usually, yes, if the system has sludge. Older systems tend to have the most of it. We check the radiators, valves and pipework first and tell you if anything looks too weak to flush.
Will a powerflush lower my heating bills?
It can help, because a clean system heats up faster and the boiler does not have to work as hard. How much you save depends on how dirty the system was, so we don't promise a figure.
Is a powerflush worth it before a new boiler?
Yes. Fitting a new boiler onto dirty water sends old sludge straight into it. Most manufacturers expect the system to be cleaned first, and some will not honour the warranty without it.
What is cheaper than a powerflush?
Bleeding radiators fixes trapped air, and a simple chemical flush can help a lightly dirty system. Neither shifts heavy, settled sludge the way a powerflush does.
