Is a magnetic filter worth it?

A magnetic filter is fitted on the pipe returning to your boiler and catches the black, magnetic debris (magnetite) circulating in your heating before it can settle in radiators or reach the boiler. After a powerflush, it keeps the system clean. Kent Powerflush fits one as part of a powerflush if your system doesn’t already have one.

How it works

The filter sits on the return pipe, just before the water goes back into the boiler. Inside is a strong magnet. As the water passes through, the magnetic sludge sticks to it instead of travelling round the system.

Do I need one?

If your system has ever had sludge, a magnetic filter is a sensible way to protect the boiler and keep the radiators clear. Boiler manufacturers often recommend one, so check your boiler’s warranty terms.

Does it need cleaning?

Yes. The magnet slowly collects debris, so the filter should be cleaned at each annual boiler service. It only takes a few minutes, and seeing what comes out tells the engineer how the system is doing.

Filter vs powerflush

A filter catches new debris as it circulates. It can’t remove sludge that has already settled in the bottom of your radiators. That’s why the filter goes in after a powerflush: the flush clears the old sludge, and the filter stops it building up again.
