Heating guide

Why is my heating slow to warm up the house?

Heating that takes ages to warm the house is most often caused by sludge restricting the flow through the radiators and boiler, air in the radiators, a system that is out of balance, or the boiler’s flow temperature set too low. If radiators are cold at the bottom or the water is black when bled, sludge is the likely cause, and a powerflush is the fix.

Check the simple things first

Make sure the thermostat is set where you want it, the timer is giving the heating enough time, and the boiler’s heating temperature hasn’t been turned right down. Radiator valves (TRVs) should be turned up in the rooms you want warm.

Sludge

Sludge narrows pipes and fills the bottom of radiators, so less hot water gets through. The boiler runs longer to reach the temperature on the thermostat, and you pay for heat you don’t feel. More on paying for heat you don’t feel.

Air and balancing

Radiators cold at the top have air in them. If some rooms heat quickly and others never get warm, the system may need balancing so the flow is shared fairly. Radiators cold upstairs?

Radiators too small

If one room is always cold even when its radiator is hot all over, the radiator may simply be too small for the room. That is a job for a heating engineer to size properly.

Questions people ask

How long should central heating take to warm a house?

It depends on the home, the insulation and the weather, but if your heating used to warm the house noticeably faster than it does now, something has changed, and sludge is a common reason.

Does a powerflush make heating warm up faster?

If sludge was restricting the flow, yes. People usually notice the house warms up faster and every radiator gets hot.

Can a slow boiler waste gas?

Yes. A boiler that runs longer to heat the same house uses more gas.
